May 9, 2022 – Indictment

A sweeping Fulton County indictment alleges that 28 individuals were involved in racketeering, street gang activity, and other charges under the name “Young Slime Life.” Jeffery Williams, better known as the rapper Young Thug, is accused of leading the gang and has been arrested. [1]

Atlanta rapper Gunna, named in the indictment, is released from jail after accepting an Alford plea. This type of plea allows the defendant to formally admit guilt in court while still maintaining their overall innocence. He is among several individuals who are eventually removed from the case through plea deals, severances, and other methods. [4]

The judge in the case rules that some of Young Thug’s lyrics will be admitted as evidence during the trial. This controversial decision has sparked debate, with some lawmakers and advocates arguing that lyrics should be considered purely artistic expression.[8]

The trial is on hold for a week in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.[15]

June 10, 2024 – Young Thug’s Attorney Arrested

Young Thug’s defense attorney, Brian Steel, is charged with criminal contempt of court and taken into custody after he refused to disclose to Judge Ural Glanville how he learned about a meeting between the judge and the prosecution that occurred without the defense’s presence.[16]

The resulting turmoil prompts several attorneys in Georgia to rally together, petitioning for a mistrial and assisting Steel with his appeal.[17]

July 17, 2024 – New Judge Recused Two Days Later

Shukura Ingram, his immediate replacement, also recused herself due to a situation where her court deputy was found to have had an inappropriate relationship with one of the defendants. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker steps in to replace her.[19]

September 30, 2024Prosecutor Criticized by Judge Whitaker

Whitaker criticized Chief Assistant District Attorney Adriane Love for her management of the case, accusing her of “hiding the ball” and “throwing this case together as you go along.”[20]

October 25, 2024 – Protestors Demand an End to the Trial

Supporters of Atlanta rapper Young Thug gather at the Fulton County Courthouse to demand an end to the nearly year-long YSL RICO trial.[21]

Currently the longest trial in Georgia’s history, proceedings are on hold until Monday, 10/28, as the judge deliberates on a possible mistrial. The latest interruption occurred on Wednesday when a witness disclosed information that was not intended for the jury’s knowledge.[22]

October 31, 2024 – Young Thug Freed From Prison After Taking Guilty Plea

Thugger reverses his original 2022 not-guilty plea, now admitting to involvement in criminal street gang activity. Additionally, he pleads no contest to charges of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and leading a criminal street gang.[23]

Judge Whitaker issues a total sentence of 40 years, with a reduction allowing for 5 years served and 15 years on probation. If he fails to meet the probation terms, he will be required to serve an additional 20 years in custody.[24]

Defense attorney Brian Steel also requested that he be permitted to maintain contact with his co-defendants, including his brother Quantavious “Unfoonk” Grier and Sergio “Gunna” Kitchens, to support his ongoing rap career.[25]

The state had recommended a minimum of 25 years in prison, making this outcome a notably lighter sentence.[26]
