New Developments in the Tupac Shakur Murder Investigation

Nearly 30 years after the murder of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, the investigation continues to reveal new leads. Last year, Crips gang member Duane “Keefe D” Davis was charged with involvement in the 1996 fatal shooting. [1]

Keefe D’s Confessions

The charges stem from two confessions Keefe D made about being present in the infamous white Cadillac that pulled up on Tupac right before his fatal shooting.[2] The first was during a 2008 police interview, where he mistakenly believed he would be granted immunity, and the second was in the TV series Death Row Chronicles (2018), in which he stated he had been recently been diagnosed with cancer and had “nothing left to lose.”[3]

Sean “Diddy” Combs Implicated

Amid the ongoing trial, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was implicated in the murder, reigniting long-standing rumors that he ordered the hit that led to Tupac’s death.[4]

The Night of the Shooting

On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Just three hours earlier, a fight had erupted between Tupac’s entourage and rival Crips gang member Orlando Anderson in the lobby of the MGM Grand hotel.[5]  The altercation reportedly originated from Anderson’s attempted robbery of one of Tupac’s associates earlier that week, with security cameras capturing Tupac instigating the fight with Anderson. [6]

Since Tupac’s death, numerous theories about his murder have emerged, often suggesting connections to Combs’ signee The Notorious B.I.G. and Death Row CEO Suge Knight, who was in the car with Tupac on the night of the shooting. [7]

Keefe D’s Allegations Against Combs

In July of 2024, Keefe D, who allegedly cooperated with the LAPD in an undercover operation to implicate Sean “Diddy” Combs in Tupac’s murder, claimed Combs ordered a $1 million hit on the West Coast legend.[8]  Legal documents obtained by The Sun reference Diddy 77 times, mentioning his various monikers Puffy, Puff Daddy, and his given name, Sean Combs throughout.[9]

Relationship with Combs

In the transcript, Keefe stated he and his gang of South Side Crips were “friends” with Combs who made it known he wanted both Suge Knight and Tupac dead.[10]

He claimed that his cohorts “accidentally” drove by Tupac and Knight in Las Vegas after a Mike Tyson fight, and his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, shot at them both.[11]

The document also stated: “Defendant asserted that the conspiracy to commit the murder began in California between Defendant, Eric ‘Zip’ Martin, and Sean Combs.”

Transcripts and Testimonies

Legal documents reveal that when police asked if Combs “played a role in this thing,” Keefe responded, “Yeah, I think he did.” Another transcript presented in court showed him recalling Puffy contacting him about Tupac’s death, with Combs reaching out to ask if the South Side Crips were responsible, saying, “Is that us?” Keefe D, beaming with pride, answered, “Yes.”[12]

Law Enforcement States Diddy Was Never a Suspect

Despite the allegations, law enforcement alerted TMZ that Diddy was never a suspect in the murder of Tupac Shakur days after the document was released.[13]  The authorities have maintained their position and, as a result, did not believe Keefe D’s claims that Puffy was directly or indirectly involved in Tupac’s death.[14]

Tupac’s Family Takes Action

Regardless, Tupac’s surviving relatives have hired attorneys Alex Spiro and Christopher Clore, along with a team of investigators, to investigate Keefe D’s allegations that Diddy offered him and his crew money to kill the rapper in the ’90s.[15]
